At BCOP, we know that a home is more than just four walls. It’s a place where people can feel safe, connect with others, and rediscover the things that bring them joy. Our supported housing schemes are designed to help tenants do exactly that—live independently with the right level of support, and the space to thrive.

One of our newest residents at Whitley Court, Shindo, has found both comfort and renewed purpose through her lifelong passion: seashell art.

Shindo moved into Whitely Court on 19 May 2025 with her husband, Chini. For nearly 40 years, she has created intricate artwork from seashells collected from the beach—framing each piece as a one-of-a-kind creation. Her designs take anywhere from three to nine hours to complete, depending on the complexity. Chini supports her craft by carefully cleaning and preparing the shells, making it a team effort rooted in care and connection.

Before arriving at Whitely Court, Shindo didn’t have the space to fully enjoy her hobby. “I brought all my items down with me,” she said, “and there was so much space. It was comfortable to carry out my hobby.” Now, she enjoys working in the communal lounge, where there’s plenty of natural light and inspiration all around.

The benefits go beyond creativity. “Doing my hobby really helps my mental health and keeps me motivated,” Shindo shared.

This is exactly what BCOP aims to offer in its supported housing: not just a place to live, but a place to thrive.

Whitley Court, located in the quiet, tree-lined neighbourhood of Handsworth Wood in Birmingham, is one of several BCOP housing schemes. Each flat offers security, independence, and access to shared spaces like lounges and gardens. Tenants also receive regular support from our Tenant support officers, who are there to help with everything from tenancy advice to emotional wellbeing.

Shindo’s seashell art is more than just a creative outlet—it’s a symbol of how the right environment can transform day-to-day life. At BCOP, we’re proud to support residents in pursuing their passions, reconnecting with themselves, and feeling truly at home.

Whether it’s crafting, gardening, or simply enjoying a peaceful routine, our supported housing schemes help older people live the best version of their later life—with support when it’s needed, and freedom when it matters most.

We welcome new housing applications from  from people aged 60+ (or from 55 if you have a disability). You can find our application form here
