BCOP invests in safer, future-ready emergency alarm systems across housing schemes

19 May, 2026

BCOP is continuing a major programme of investment to upgrade emergency alarm systems across its housing schemes, helping to ensure residents remain safe and supported as the UK moves from analogue to digital telephone networks.

The nationwide Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN), often referred to as the move from analogue to digital landlines, is being rolled out across the UK with most areas being fully digital by January 2027. Traditional analogue phone lines are gradually being replaced with digital services, meaning older alarm and telecare equipment must also be upgraded to remain fully operational.

At BCOP, every resident property is fitted with a 24-hour emergency alarm system, providing reassurance and immediate access to help if needed. To prepare for the national change, the charity has invested approximately £150,000 in upgrading systems across its housing schemes.

Work has already been successfully completed at BCOP’s sheltered housing schemes at Whitley Court, Harvey Court and Edgcumbe Court, alongside independent living schemes at Walford Turner Homes, Newman Court and Frew Lodge.

The remaining schemes across Birmingham are scheduled to be upgraded before the end of 2026.

The new digital-compatible systems are designed to provide improved reliability and resilience, ensuring residents continue to receive the same peace of mind and rapid emergency support they rely on every day.

Helen Gore, CEO,  said: “ This is a significant investment made by the charity. We wanted to be sure that every resident continues to feel safe and has the peace of mind that comes with having a modern, 24-hour emergency alarm system in their own home”.

The national digital switchover is being led by the telecommunications industry and affects homes and organisations across the country. Older analogue devices that depend on traditional phone lines — including some alarm systems — may stop working correctly unless upgraded. By carrying out the work early and in phases, BCOP is helping to minimise disruption for residents while ensuring every scheme is fully prepared ahead of the national deadline.

The upgrade programme forms part of BCOP’s ongoing commitment to maintaining safe, modern and supportive housing environments for older people across Birmingham.
