Independent Living

Self-contained homes for a safe, independent lifestyle

Live independently with confidence

Freedom, comfort and peace of mind
Safe, well-maintained and designed with you in mind

At BCOP, we understand how important it is to stay independent in later life, while also feeling secure, supported and at home. That’s why we offer six independent living schemes across Birmingham, providing safe, self-contained homes for older people aged 60+ (or 55+ with a disability).

Each scheme is run by BCOP, a local charity with over 75 years of experience supporting older people. That means you benefit from a trusted, fair landlord and a friendly in-house maintenance team, with no hidden charges or letting agent fees to worry about.

With no on-site staff and no shared facilities, tenants have the freedom to manage their own lives and routines, while knowing that support is only a call away in an emergency.

What is independent living?

Private homes with practical features included.

Our independent living properties are one-bedroom bungalows or flats, each with:

  • A private lounge, kitchen, bedroom and shower room (no baths)
  • Central heating and secure entry
  • A 24-hour emergency alarm call system with pull cords in every room
  • Optional pendant alarms available if required
  • Property and garden maintenance included

All homes are close to local shops, public transport and community facilities, offering easy access to everyday essentials.

Reliable maintenance

Experienced and friendly property team

All our independent living homes are maintained by BCOP’s own experienced and friendly property team. Whether it’s a dripping tap, a broken light or a planned improvement, you’ll be looked after by people who care about your home as much as you do.

You’ll have complete freedom to live your life your way, with the reassurance that your home is secure, well-managed, and part of a caring community. Our schemes are designed for older people who don’t need day-to-day support but want a home where things just work, with no surprises.

Some schemes offer shared gardens where neighbours can meet and socialise, while others provide quiet, self-contained spaces for those who prefer privacy.

Safe, informed and involved

Trusted and regulated

As a social housing landlord, BCOP is part of the Housing Ombudsman Scheme, offering fair, independent processes for handling complaints and feedback. We also keep tenants up to date with regular newsletters, and share clear safety advice through easy-to-read tenant leaflets.

How we allocate housing

Our homes are allocated based on need, not application date. We consider your health, housing, financial and social circumstances, and if we don’t have availability straight away, we’ll add you to our waiting list and keep you informed.
