Al Carns MP visits Neville Williams House to support BCOP’s 80th anniversary appeal

27 May, 2026

Neville Williams House was delighted to welcome Al Carns MP on Friday 17 April as part of BCOP’s ongoing 80th anniversary celebrations and fundraising appeal.

During the visit, home manager Amy Beasley discussed with Mr Carns the changing landscape of care over the past decade and reflected on how nursing homes have evolved to support people with increasingly complex needs. Discussions also highlighted the growing pressures facing the social care sector, including rising operational costs and increasing demand for specialist dementia care.

Mr Carns was given a tour of Neville Williams House, where he explored the home’s interactive and community-inspired spaces. During the visit he spent time in the popular Forget-Me-Not Pub, and in the sensory room which help create meaningful opportunities for reminiscence, relaxation and social connection for residents and families. He visited the newly created Captain’s Table nautical-themed dining room, viewed the almost completed cinema room and heard more about the exciting plans now taking shape for a future sensory street development.

The MP commented positively on the welcoming atmosphere within the home and praised the friendliness of staff and residents. He was particularly impressed by the way Neville Williams House creates meaningful social environments for residents, allowing them to continue enjoying shared experiences with family and friends even when getting out into the wider community becomes more difficult.

During the visit, Mr Carns spent time chatting with residents and staff and described Neville Williams House as a unique place with a strong sense of warmth and community. He also expressed his support for BCOP’s fundraising campaign to build additional sensory streets and kindly offered to help promote the appeal through his own media channels.

BCOP’s sensory streets are designed to provide safe, interactive and reminiscence-focused environments for people living with dementia, helping to spark memories, encourage conversation and reduce anxiety through familiar sights and experiences.

The visit concluded with Mr Carns expressing his enthusiasm to return to Neville Williams House for the official opening of the new cinema room.

Everyone at BCOP would like to thank Al Carns MP for taking the time to visit Neville Williams House and for supporting our mission to create meaningful and engaging environments for older people across Birmingham.
