Friendship, flowers and knitting at Robert Harvey House

3 November, 2026

Sometimes it's the little things that make the biggest difference – a friendly face, a good conversation or the chance to learn something new.

At Robert Harvey House, our nursing home in Handsworth Wood, residents are enjoying regular visits from volunteers through Befriending Matters, a lovely initiative run by local Birmingham and Walsall charity Advocacy Matters. Their project is made possible through funding from the National Lottery Community Fund.

The scheme matches older people living in care homes with friendly, trained volunteers who visit regularly, offering companionship, conversation and opportunities to enjoy activities together. This is especially valuable to residents who do not have family members living close nearby.

Two of our residents, Edna and Eric, have been enjoying visits from volunteers Kathryn and Michael, who bring warmth, friendship and plenty of creative ideas to their time together. On one visit, Kathryn helped create some beautiful flower arrangements, and during other visits Edna shared her creative skills with Kathryn, teaching her how to knit. These simple, enjoyable activities offer opportunities to learn, share stories and build friendships. Michael and Eric often enjoy chatting and listening to some music together.

Anthea Reid, General Manager at Robert Harvey House, welcomes the individual attention the scheme provides.

“I feel this very personal approach is really suited to the individual needs of our residents,” she explains.

While group activities are an important and enjoyable part of life at Robert Harvey House, individual visits offer something different. They allow residents to spend time with someone who can focus entirely on their interests, preferences and conversations, at their own pace.

The Befriending Matters service is particularly valuable for older people who may feel isolated or have fewer opportunities for visits from family and friends.

The volunteers are trained and checked, and the service is free. Activities can include crafts, film afternoons and other shared interests, with visits taking place in care homes or at community venues.

We're delighted that Edna and Eric are enjoying these special visits and would like to thank Kathryn and the Advocacy Matters befriending volunteers for the kindness, time and friendship they bring to our residents.
