Celebrating dedication: BCOP long service awards 2025

17 September, 2025

People are at the heart of everything we do – and that includes our staff, whose commitment ensures that older people in Birmingham receive the very best care and support. This September, we were proud to host two long service award ceremonies to recognise the dedication of colleagues who have given many years of service to BCOP. The first ceremony was held at Robert Harvey House on Tuesday 9 September, where CEO Helen Gore presented awards, assisted by trustees Dr Nicky Bradbury, John Bennet and Lydia Willetts. Staff recognised were:

  • Noreen Fleming (Robert Harvey House) – 35 years of service
  • Jane Joesbury (Robert Harvey House) – 15 years of service
  • Mesha Watson (Robert Harvey House) – 15 years of service
  • Mandeep Kaur (Robert Harvey House) – 10 years of service
  • Darren Day (Direct Labour Operative) – 10 years of service
  • Ray Le Tissier (Direct Labour Operative) – 10 years of service

Our Direct Labour Operatives (or DLOs) are qualified tradespeople who carry out maintenance, refits and repairs across all our schemes, helping ensure our homes and housing remain safe, welcoming and well-maintained for residents.

The celebration included refreshments for all, with Robert Harvey House’s famous samosas and spring rolls, along with celebration cakes to mark the special occasion.

A second ceremony took place at Neville Williams House on Wednesday 17 September, where Helen was joined by trustees Tapshum Pattni, Peta Mandelberg and John bennett. Awards were presented to:

  • Sulender Banga (Neville Williams House) – 10 years of service
  • Veronica Taroiu (Neville Williams House) – 10 years of service
  • Sainabou Touray (Neville Williams House) – 10 years of service
  • Tracey O’Shaughnessy (Office Manager, Support Office) – 15 years of service

Residents, staff and guests enjoyed celebratory cakes and refreshments together after the presentations.

All award recipients were presented with a certificate, a gift card and a beautiful orchid as a token of BCOP’s gratitude for their dedication and commitment.

These ceremonies were a chance to reflect on the huge contribution of colleagues across our care teams, support office, and property services. Their work is deeply valued not just by BCOP, but by the residents of our nursing homes and housing schemes, who form close bonds with our staff over many years. For older people in particular, this continuity and familiarity is essential – providing security, trust, and a true sense of belonging.

In a sector where staff turnover can often be high, our BCOP charity stands out as a place of work where people choose to stay, grow, and build lasting relationships. That stability benefits everyone – our teams, our organisation, and above all the older people we are here to support.

We're proud that so many of our staff choose to remain part of the BCOP family, reflecting our values of working together and putting people at the heart of everything we do. Congratulations to all of this year’s long service award recipients – and thank you for helping us provide the best possible support to our community.
