As part of Trustee Week 2025, we’re shining a light on the people who help shape BCOP’s mission and direction — our dedicated Trustees. From seasoned members reflecting on their years of service to those just starting their journey, each Trustee brings valuable experience, curiosity and commitment to improving later life for older people in Birmingham.
After nine years as a BCOP Trustee, John Bennett says his inspiration came from wanting to “give back” after retirement — using his business experience and leadership skills to support a local charity with a strong social purpose.
Reflecting on his time on the Board, John highlights the importance of curiosity and constructive challenge:
“Don’t be afraid to ask questions (politely) and do the detail.”
He is proud to have contributed through years of difficult trading, helping to see one of BCOP’s homes turn a profit — “a moment that showed and endorsed the power of perseverance and hard work.” His advice to future Trustees is to stay focused on BCOP’s purpose, ensure good governance, and see the role as “a two-way learning experience.”
Nigel Wilson, one of BCOP’s newest Trustees, joined after meeting Chief Executive Helen Gore and being drawn to BCOP’s history and mission.
“It’s a very unique organisation in the city and deserves a strong future to continue its important work for older people.”
His first impressions? “Small, unique and interesting.” He’s been impressed by the transformation led by the current team and the range of properties BCOP manages, and he looks forward to contributing his expertise to help move the organisation forward.
For Nigel, being a Trustee is:
“A wonderful opportunity to contribute to a great organisation and support superb colleagues delivering for the benefit of older folk in the city.”
Lydia Willetts, also new to the Board, describes BCOP as “small but mighty.” She was drawn by its strong values and person-centred approach:
“Every decision is made with the people that live with us and their families at the forefront of everyone’s minds.”
Although new to the role, Lydia says she learns something at every meeting and is excited to bring her marketing and communications experience to support BCOP’s growth.
“Being a BCOP Trustee truly feels like you’re making a difference to the lives of older people living across Birmingham.”
Whether passing the baton or taking it up for the first time, our Trustees share one purpose — ensuring BCOP continues to broaden choices for older people and help every person live the best version of their later life.
This Trustee Week, we celebrate the wisdom, energy, and dedication our Trustees bring to the table — and thank them for their invaluable contribution to our journey.
